Message from the Newsletter Editor
Joanne Scillitoe, Michigan Technological University |
I hope everyone is having a productive semester and also making plans to attend the 2008 EAM Conference! The conference is a time to connect with our colleagues and friends, both new and old alike, and learn about current research and teaching initiatives. I have been involved with the EAM since 2001 and have always felt that the conference is where I can best feel the energy of the EAM. The EAM group is a lively and supportive learning community that is always welcoming of new members. I particularly recommend that doctoral students attend the upcoming conference and get involved with the EAM. I have found many mentors and supporters within the EAM that have helped me through my doctoral studies, job search, and now my early years as an academic. I am proud to call the EAM as my home society, even from as far away as Michigan! As you peruse this edition of the Newsletter, you will find 2008 Conference information from our Program and Local Arrangements VP's. Both Laurel and Liz tell us it is time to get registered for the conference and arrange our hotel reservations! We also have several exhibitors who will be at the conference and any EAM authors who would like to display their books may exhibit them at the conference as well. There is more information in the Exhibitors section of the Newsletter. Dave Fearon reminds us that time is the most important gift one can give to the EAM. As the 2008 elections are quickly approaching, he provides us with some suggestions on how we can contribute our time, in both large and small doses, to the EAM. Consider volunteering in the EAM. I can assure you that the rewards of enabling the success of EAM and getting to better know your EAM colleagues will far outweigh the work asked! On the front of OMJ, the EAM journal, Bill Ferris has some interesting and exciting updates to share. He has also provided us with a form to get a free trial for an institutional subscription. See the OMJ link for more information. Finally, never to be idle, the gangs in charge of the 2009 EAM Conference in Hartford and the 2009 EAM-I Conference in Rio are hard at work. Sites have been identified and details are emerging. It isn't too early to put these conference dates on your calendar and to start thinking about submissions for these conferences! Looking forward to seeing everyone in Washington soon! |
