The new millennium is underway and the EAM community surely has a lot to celebrate, such as its well-deserved reputation for terrific program innovations and a wonderfully supportive community. Yet I’ve found nothing in scripture that promises “EAM shalt last forever.” The national Academy’s leadership is rethinking the positioning of regional associations and Deans and faculty are questioning their value. With the world around us changing significantly, so must we. It’s time to re-invent EAM!!
I’ve invited a diverse slice of the EAM community to participate in a two-day strategic planning retreat in late October during which we will immerse ourselves in a sustained conversation about how we can transform EAM into an even more powerful organization/community. Our conversation will be facilitated by Peter Roche, of the London-Perry-Roche Group, who has successfully guided many executive and academic teams in strategic visioning/planning activities. How can we distinguish EAM as an entity that delivers the greatest possible unique value? It occurs for me that we are more likely to generate great things if we envision what we truly desire and then promise to deliver that vision. What promises should EAM make to the world? What promises should EAM make to you? You may be contacted by one of the participants about your thoughts regarding the above questions. We will also be setting up an on-line “re-invention” conference space to expand the conversation beyond the retreat (stay tuned for an email notice). With your help I know that we will create a community of practice that you will not want or be able to stay away from.
