Prague as the site of the eighth Managing in a Global Economy conference met everyone's expectations as the "Paris of Eastern Europe." By the way, the conference was a big success as well! In partnership with the CMC Graduate School of Business in Celakovice, the EAM designed a program that focused on the challenges of transforming economies, particularly those that were formerly a part of the Soviet Union. Beginning with the opening night panel hosted by Arthur Anderson on trends and issues of managing in the Czech Republic, to the closing dinner at the world famous Smetana Concert Hall, the agenda offered an array of provocative and informative sessions featuring both scholars and practitioners. Some highlights included:
  • Ing. Tomas Jezek, Chairman of the Prague Stock Exchange, and Karel Kuhnl, former Minister of Industry and Trade, debating the merits of past and current privatization initiatives led by the Czech government.
  • B. Gutmann of Volkswagen A.G., Germany, and Rathin Basu of Ferrum College discussing the strategy adopted by Volkswagen to bring about the integration of its culture with that of SKODA amtomobia, a state-owned enterprise.
  • A visit to the Skoda-Volkswagen facility to view the results of that merger in action.
  • The general manager of Bohemia Glassworks on what it takes to motivate today's workers in the Czech economy.
In addition, the first Carolyn R. Dexter Outstanding Paper Award was presented. The winner was David A. Morand of Penn State for his paper, "Reconsidering Hofstede's power distance measure: Toward the development of a more valid, multifactorial scale."

Approximately 150 people from 20 countries were involved in the conference as participants, invited speakers, and guests. Such an endeavor calls for a great deal of time and effort on the part of many volunteers. The EAM International Program Committee organizers--Program Chair Theo Peridis, Conference Coordinator Kathy Dechant, and Directors David Palmer and Dilip Mirchandani--extend their appreciation to all who were involved. Special thanks goes to Jerzy Letkowski for his assistance in setting up the registration program on the EAM website and to Heidi Vernon, Karen Newman, Phyllis Raabe, Aniysa Thomas, Heinz Weilrich, and Toru Yoshikawa for their contributions as Program Committee members.
